Rules for both professional and amateur division

TRICKS & DIPS
A maximum of 3 Tricks (Dips, Drops or Flares) is allowed. For these skills, a minimum of 1 foot must remain on the floor at all times. A maximum of 1 lift is allowed. Shines are permitted although not more than 30% of the performance may consist of shines or side by sides. Routine must consist of at least 80% recognizable salsa dancing.

Trick Combinations
Multiple Positions are okay in Trick Combinations but no more than 3 Total Positions may be achieved in any combination. However, there cannot be any stops during the combinations. Positions much consistently flow from one to the next, with no stops. If there is a stop, each position will be counted as a separate trick, and will count toward the 3 trick limit. No trick or trick combination can last more than two 8-counts.

Continuous Turns
Multiple/Continuous turns such as Multiple Turns in one spot, Touch and Go style turns, or Pot Stirrers/Corkscrews cannot last longer than two 8-counts.

Props
Props are not permitted. Extra costume pieces such as hats or jackets are permitted if they are part of the costume, and are not discarded at any time during the performance. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in 20% off of the final score.

Stops/Freezes
Dancers cannot maintain an extended Stop or Freeze position for more than one 8-count. Extended Stops or Freezes cannot happen more than two times in the routine.

LIFTS
A lift is defined as any movement during which one of the dancers has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of their partner. Whether the feet are 2 inches off the floor or 10 feet off the floor, this type of assisted movement will still be considered a lift or trick.

WARM-UP

All of the couples in each division will dance together to a warm-up song chosen by the DJ (not to exceed 2 minutes). Couples will then enter into the competition as previously described. There will be warm-ups for each division.

Music for the individual performances:
For all divisions music must be at least 80% Salsa. You are allowed to mix no more than 3 different songs in one routine. The 20% of your routine, that you are allowed to have other music besides salsa, can be any music of your choice. The routine must be no longer than 2 minutes. These criteria will be checked by the judges. Prepare 2 CDs with your music for your routine. There should only be music for the routine on each CD. The CDs should be ready to be played as is. The DJ will not slow down or speed up your CD. The song must not exceed 2 minutes. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in 5% off of the final score. Each CD must be identified with your name and the division that you are competing in.

COSTUMES:

Contestants are encouraged to wear costumes or matching outfits. We strongly suggest that jeans not be used as costumes. One person from each couple will be asked to wear a fabric number sign pinned to their back. We encourage ladies wearing dresses or skirts wear nylons or fishnets.

ORDER OF COMPETITION

The Amateur division will compete first and then the Professional division. Order of competitors in each division will be determined the day of the competition based on the number assigned to each couple.  (Time when dancers to be present)ALL dancers need to be present to obtain their number. If you are not present, you will be disqualified; the entry fee will not be refunded.

JUDGING CRITERIA:

Timing- 20%
Was correct rhythm maintained throughout the routine? Were syncopations deliberate and within the acceptable deviations of timing for the dance? Points will NOT be deducted if you are dancing “on 1” and return by breaking on “5”. The same if you are dancing “on 2” and return by breaking on “6”. If you were to return on any other beat than that mentioned you will be deducted points. Please note that this is in keeping with the official rules for the World Salsa Championships.

Technique -25%
Reflected through balance, placement and line. Partners must reflect adequate "Latin/Salsa Motion" and "Isolations" as designated by the dance style. Movement should appear to be effortless. These are all reflections of good dance technique.

Difficulty- 12.5%
What was the level of the turns utilized? The amount of turns on both double and single foot? By both parties or only one? How intricate were the shines, tricks and dips? Any movements requiring exceptional balance, flexibility or strength? Were all movements attempted successfully executed? Was the lift executed easily? Did one or both partners loose balance during the lift?

Partner Work- 12.5%
How well did the couple work together as a team? Was there an actual Lead/Follow relationship established?

Choreography/Originality – 10%
How well put together was the performance? Did the routine flow easily from one movement to the next? Was there something clever or new that was part of the routine? How musical was it?

Appearance/ Artistic- 10%
How professional and polished did the couple appear to be? Did they project to the audience and capture their attention? Were their costumes appropriate?

Synchronization- 10%
Both couples and teams must be synchronized when parts are choreographed to be synchronized.  How synchronized was the team during side-by-side movement or shines?

Difficulty can be ranked as follows:

A Level: Basic movement, no single footed turns, no multiple turns, no single leg balance elements, no splits, dips etc…. 0-5.9

B Level: Intermediate level salsa patterns, double turns, single pirouettes or variations of such, basic syncopations or shine movements, Basic Dips 6.0 – 7.9

C Level: Multiple Touch and Go Spot Turns, Intricate Multi-Level Hand Changes in Patterns, Single Leg Independent Balance Elements, Intricate Syncopations and Movement for Shine Patterns and Choreography, Intricate Dips or Flairs that do not leave the floor, maximum 1 lift 8.0 -10.0.

Infractions:

5 points will be deducted from technique for a major fall.

5 points will be deducted from connection/partnering if there is a major misconnect or if a team loses synchronicity for more than 2 bars of 8 counts.

The couple will be disqualified with no refund if a second lift is executed- any part of the body of wither dancer goes above the partners’ shoulders. However if both feet of either dancer leave the ground, 5 points will be deducted.

Judges

In every round there will be: 1 head judge and other 5 judges all well-known instructors and dancers in the salsa dances and well-known ballet choreographers. The head judge will watch for: the keeping of the conditions for music of the shows, continuation of the dance, forbidden movements. His/her judgments are taken into account when competitors have equal points.

The rest of the judges evaluate in compliance with the above mentioned criteria. To maintain fair judgment, if there is a big difference in allocation of points from one judge compared to the other four, then that judge will be asked to explain his/ her decision to the other judges, this is to avoid a judge being “biased” towards some competitors.
