Cosme Proenza Almaguer
"Autoretrato" 2004, oil on canvas |
International recognition for Cosme Proenza Almaguer’s work reflects the timeless appeal of his subject matter. He received the Lenin Prize from the Art Institute in Kiev in 1983, and in 1997, the Vatican acquired one of his paintings. His recent works depict more fantastic gardens of earthly delights than those of Hieronymus Bosch. Mythical creatures dwell and frolic in classical landscapes. Lurking in the shadows of a world that recalls ‘Middle Earth,’ are hints at the possible presence of human inhabitants. Elaborate drapery clothes figures that never show their faces; hands grow from sleeves attached to an invisible torso. When he chooses to depict a full human body, Cosme (as he signs his work) draws on the classics and on biblical figures. Although the paintings seem devoid of any contemporary references, every so often a young male gazes at the viewer as if he knew us, or, perhaps like some of Caravaggio’s models, as if he lived around the corner, in the artist’s neighbourhood.
