Pedro Pablo Oliva, who counts the Alejo Carpentier Medal among his many awards, draws his inspiration from the magical realm where literature and politics intersect with art history. In the words of Cuban art critic Hector Antón Castillo, the painter “reserves the privilege of dreaming, even if it means that he will step on quicksand.” In response to the invitation from Hamilton, Oliva created a new series of mixed media paintings on board, which he calls “Small Studies for The Nutcracker.” Sensuously drawn from the narrative of the Nutcracker, the figures drift in the lightness of a child’s dream. Although he often references real personalities from Cuba’s literary and political halls of fame, his real mission is to pick up where early modernists left off. The fascination with forms that did not adhere to the western canons of fine art in the work of Klee, Miró or Chagall carries on in many of Oliva’s paintings. In characters from legends, fairytales and dreams, Oliva has created an ideal cast of visual storytellers for a series of paintings that pay homage to the ballet.
