For the past four years, Kristin Stawiarski, a grade 12 student at St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School in Hamilton, has volunteered for the Canadian Ballet Youth Ensemble to promote literacy awareness, fundraise, and enhance the arts in the community. Three years ago, she initiated the Kids Helping Kids campaign to raise money to allow low-income or terminally ill children to see The Nutcracker. “By the end of the campaign, students gained a broader appreciation and awareness of the world around them,” she says. Kristin also participates with the DREAMS project, through which she helped build houses in the Dominican Republic. With her involvement in the Dancing, Acting, Recreational, Education, Singing (DARES) project, Kristin helps expose less-fortunate children to the arts. She plans to study pharmacy, psychology or law at university.
