How can teachers assist in the student’s development in dance?
After the presentation teachers are encouraged to discuss with the students the opportunities that are available to them for pursuing their interest in dance as it pertains to ballet.
Ballet isn't just for girls - many men take part in ballet both as performers, choreographers and composers. Many athletes both male and female take ballet to enhance their focus, balance and technique for sports such as soccer, football, gymnastics and figure skating.
Breaking through the myth that sports and dance are two opposites, the two have many similarities rather than differences. Dance has all the elements of a sport: physical endurance, coordination, practice, discipline, and even, in some cases, competition. Yet many, if not most, dancers define dance as something distinctly different from a typical athletic activity. Dancers are both artists & athletes, performing at the highest levels of human performance. Scientific studies have been done trying to determine what is the "toughest, most difficult to master, most challenging sport". Researchers looked at 60 sports & rated them based on over 20 performance criteria including physical, intellectual, & environmental.
The "toughest sport" was Ballet! Dancers often do not consider themselves as athletes, but in reality, the physical demands they place upon themselves rival almost any athletic endeavor. A recent report in Sports Magazine tried to determine who were the toughest athletes in the rough and tough of pro sports. Their choice was a ballerina. The article, "Real Jocks Wear Tutus" went on to describe the rigorous training, schedule and physical demands that dancers face just about every day of there life. They are indeed athletes, and just as other athletes can learn a great deal from dancers, dancers would be wise to embrace many of the proven strategies athletes use in the areas of training, nutrition and rehabilitation.
The same way Arnold Schwarzenegger (bodybuilding), Bruce Lee (martial arts), Greg Louganis (Olympic gold medal diver), Willie Gault and Hirschl Walker (pro football) and many other high level athletes have used ballet training to make them better at their sport, dancers can "cross-train" like athletes to make themselves more resilient, less injury prone and improve performance.
Students have two great opportunities of becoming involved with ballet.
- All students, male and female ages 7 – 18 are encouraged to come and participate in Nutcracker Auditions at 145 Main Street East. Over the past 15 years over 1,200 local students have performed in The Nutcracker. Students who are successful in the audition will have the opportunity to perform with The National Ballet of Cuba in The Nutcracker at Hamilton Place in December and in Havana Cuba in January 2012.
In December you school be given a a special invitation to come and see the school matinee performance of The Nutcracker where you will be able to see your students performing on stage.
- Register for ballet classes with the Hamilton Cuban School of Ballet. Our school is affiliated with the National Ballet of Cuba, one of the top 5 ballet companies in the world.
